CONCLUSIONS

The study carried out is an interesting application of the simulation problems integrated with the development of decision support tools based on applied AI techniques.
In this case, the problem is very concrete and refers to a well-defined plant situation. Therefore, the in-depth knowledge of the production process and the technical and economic specifications are very important.
The possibility of applying these methods even to this type of plant guarantees a large increase in quality since it is possible to improve a process that has strategic importance in terms of social services (waste treatment). This activity is also provided with a set of support tools that can be used to make it economically advantageous and reduce the burden on the community.
Today, this has become a reality because the simulation, experimentation and modelling techniques have become more reliable and can be used to create detail models that faithfully reproduce real industrial situations, at reasonable costs and within acceptable time periods even for small and medium-sized plants.
The composting activity, as already mentioned, is of vital importance and its development, especially in Italy, is a reality. Developing flexible tools based on Object-Oriented logic creates a starting point from which to deal with and support many industrial situations.
