Character and Language of Scientfic Visualization: Applications in Medicine

Submitting Author: Dr. Klaus de Geus

Abstract:
The role of the Scientific Visualization discipline in many areas of science cannot be questioned. However, care must be taken on the way in which scientists look at the nature of phenomena to which visualization techniques must be applied. A brief discussion on the character of human visualization processes is presented, as well as considerations on the language the human visual process uses to derive satisfactory perception of scientific phenomena, depending on certain characteristics they intrinsically present. With this in mind, applications of visualization techniques in medicine are presented, which aim to address specific needs of the medical community in terms of perception so as to ensure they get better results in their procedures without having to reckon or mentally form pictures which they can understand. These applications include visualization tools for radiotherapy planning, stylization of brain tumours and structures of interest and analysis of regions of act
ivation in the brain.
