ABSTRACT
An international team developed The Intensive Education Program in Advanced Logistics (IEPAL) to promote effective learning experiences and nurture a generation of internationally minded simulation professionals. IEPAL models what Warren Bennis calls “teams of leaders.” The program brings students from the US to Europe and from France, Germany and Italy to America. . The students in the Orlando stage, encounter the modeling and simulation community in Central Florida and, as a requirement, examine the IEPAL experience in a weekly formal Review and Analysis session to address cultural and linguistic confusion in terms of what they learn, unlearn and relearn. It is a challenge to develop short-term meaningful work experiences among managers who are unfamiliar with such an approach. Not surprisingly, communicating daily in English is a challenge for the students as is working on becoming an international team in a foreign country. They are immersed in English, the language of h
igh technology, and attend group meetings and work on team projects at organizations in the Central Florida Research Park Their mentors are representatives of organizations that are members of the National Center for Simulation (NCS). Because simulation has better decision-making as its purpose, supports efforts to keep up with a changing world and models and promotes team leadership and vision—these topics are a focus of student interactions with employers, academic researchers, government project managers and analysts. Examination of experience reinforces learning. The paper will provide data on the total experience and propose several means for continuing the experiment with IEPAL participants and future students.
