Needs and Proposals for Theoretical Research on On-Line Simulation

Abstract:
Complex systems such as flexible manufacturing systems and traffic systems typically evolve with alternating periods of transient and nearly steady-state behavior; such systems often show suboptimal performance. Thus, it is desirable to optimize the system's performance on-line by adjusting the system's parameters properly before a performance drop is to occur. To this end, the system's future evolution is assessed in advance repeatedly by means of on-line simulation.
So far, a considerable number of studies regarding the application of on-line simulation has been presented in the literature; however, most of these studies confine themselves to applying tools and classical results from conventional off-line simulation. As a consequence, their results are by far not sufficient for widely adoption to the real world; thus, the main application domains regarding flexible manufacturing and traffic still seek for actual, ground braking solutions. By now, no strict theoretical research has been done.
We briefly survey the literature regarding on-line simulation, considering both theoretical and practical aspects. Summarizing the results of both the survey and our own research, we introduce essential properties of on-line simulation in more detail and, considering these properties, discuss open problems, while we propose possible solutions that may be developed by further theoretical research.
