Modeling Driver Behavior: A Combined Equation-Based and Fuzzy-Based Approach

Abstract:
Our focus in this paper is to propose a model of the acceleration and steering behaviors of a human driver as basis to build a road traffic simulator at a microscopic level.
While being aware of the long history of equation-based modeling, our approach deals with driver's approximation and decision-making mechanisms in blending basic behaviors by means of fuzzy set theory. Moreover, we propose a unified framework to model the steering behavior for different driving scenarios using the key idea of target position.
A road traffic simulator, called XTrafSim, has been built upon the proposed driver model. Results obtained from the simulation of some driving scenarios show its capability to carry out a human-like behavior in terms of approximating the appropriate action for the current situation.
