Abstract:
This paper describes an innovative application of computer modeling and visualization technology to meet a workforce training and social need. Project SkillTek is a U.S. Department of Labor-funded project to explore using advanced computer technology to address workforce-training needs. The project developed and tested a pilot curriculum in the secondary schools that allowed students to explore career occupations through the use of immersive virtual experiences that replicate the working environment they might experience in those trade professions. SkillTek was developed by Norfolk State University as an academic member of the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center. The data collected and observations made during the pilot clearly demonstrated that secondary school students are highly engaged by computer simulations and the virtual experiences they provide. This approach can provide an important approach to helping at-risk students consider alternative occupationa
l opportunities and motivate them toward preparing themselves academically to enter those professions.
