STRATEGOS is a new initiative devoted to promote quantitative modeling to support decisions by developing a new generation of Engineers able to deal with Strategic Thinking and to support Decision Makers by mastering advance modeling, simulation as well as other enabling technological and scientific areas. Strategic Thinking and Strategy Development have been always key Competitive Factors, given the Complexity of the Reality and of Human Goals. Strategy means ability to deal with a variety of variables, taking into account uncertainty, scalability, extensibility, dependability, multiplayer. Indeed the term Strategy comes from greek combining stratos (army) and agein (leading), so it is pretty clear that it deals with leading resources. In facts, it has been said that "Strategy is the art of good direction" ("La Stratégie est l'art de bien diriger", Jomini, Prècis de l'Art de la Guerre, 1838) and this good direction should rely today, in order to be keep competitive, on new supports and models that require a new kind of Engineers able to develop, tune and use them. "We need a philosophy of strategy that contains the seeds of its constant rejuvenation, a way to chart strategy in an unstable environment" is a sentence by Von Clausewitz, published by his wife while almost 200 years ago (Vom Kriege, 1832); this unstable environment as well as the necessity to guarantee constant evolution of strategies is very actual today. Indeed classic definitions say that Strategy relies on effective plans able to achieving success in challenging situations such as business, industry, politics, war, etc. Therefore we should remind the definition of Von Moltke "Strategy is a system of expedients; it is more than a mere scholarly discipline" as well as "no plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force" (Militarische Werke, 1871). These considerations are still valid today , however the Preußischer Generalfeldmarschall does not will to state useless of Strategy, but exactly the opposite: the necessity to adopt a Dynamic and Fluid Strategic Approach that is exactly what we have to face nowadays. Twnety five centuries ago Sun Tzu stated that "Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat" (Art of War, Laying Plan, 500 BC) and ancient "calculations" corresponds to modern "modeling and simulation". This considerations make it clear the aim of STRATEGOS Master in Engineering (Laurea Magistrale dell'Universita' di Genova), to prepare people to develop these models and solutions and to win competition in a wide spectrum of applications. We can just one statement among millions that confirms the importance of Strategic Engineering: "If you want to grow, find a good opportunity. Today, if you want to be a great company, think about what Social Problem you could solve." (Ma Yun, alias Jack Ma, co-founder and executive chairman of Alibaba, in 2018: Personal Net Worth 42.2 GUSD; Alibaba 462th World Raking, 23.8GUSD Revenues, 6.2GUSD Profits, 56% Growth in Net Revenues, Stocks +15% within a single month). Strategy is nowadays strongly related to Complex Systems involving Quantitative Data and Digital Information. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are few Master Programs, worldwide, specifically dedicated to Strategy Development with solid Modeling and Simulation (M&S), Engineering Foundations and strong Integration with Innovative Enabling Technologies and Architecture related to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Indeed, Engineering is not just about designing new Technological Systems and Products, but even to support Identification and Definition of New Strategies devoted to direct Future Developments. These aspects deal with developing New Processes, Solutions and Organizations devoted to achieve the Success respect Strategic Goals. In facts the Operational Lifecycle of Innovative Systems are usually quite long, rich of Uncertainties and strongly affected by many Variables as well as by different potential Scenarios; so a proper approach in Modeling and Analyzing Quantitatively these Elements is fundamental for the Final Success. Understanding these issues is really fundamental and it is necessary to prepare Engineers and Scientists able to create models for supporting decision makers. Despite this importance, up to now, these Strategic Aspects are frequently roughly addressed by traditional approaches and educational practices: often just qualitative approaches or simplified static analysis methodologies are proposed as investigation aid, while, vice versa, today modern M&S, Machine Learning, Big Data, Innovative ICT solutions are potentially more effective in dynamically addressing these Issues. The main goal of this initiative is to set up a new Engineering Master Program (Laurea Magistrale, 2 years) which relies on M&S and ICT education and it is able to address Strategic Modeling and Decision Support, providing the Deep Scientific Knowledge as well as the Technical Engineering Skills needed for developing, tailoring and using methodologies for Strategy Definition, Innovative Solution Development and Capability Assessment. Obviously this Engineering Master Program (Laurea Magistrale dell'Universita' di Genova) will address Strategy in broad sense with special attention to Applicative Sectors related to Industry, Business and Defense, considering Products, Processes, Events and Scenarios . The Professional Figure that will result as outcome of this Master Program (Laurea Magistrale dell'Universita' di Genova, 2 years) will be able to operate in a variety of application domains (ranging from Manufacturing to Engineering, from Military Sector to Business, from Politics to Personal and Societal Development), being able not only to apply Strategies using the most appropriate Models, but also to gain Requirements for new Methods and to design new Methodologies, Techniques and Instruments for Strategic Planning and Management.

STRATEGOS promotes the use of Strategic Engineering as new discipline based on combining innovative methodologies, techniques and bleeding edge technologies. In facts, Strategic Engineering combines Modeling, Simulation, Data Analytics, AI/IA and Machine Learning to support Strategic Decision Making. It is evident this discipline requires trans-disciplinary skills to be effectively applied to real challenging Problems. Indeed STRATEGOS is a new initiative devoted to promote quantitative modeling to support decisions by developing a new generation of Engineers able to deal with Strategic Thinking and to support Decision Makers by mastering advance modeling, simulation as well as other enabling technological and scientific areas. The operational lifecycle of innovative systems are usually quite long and rich of uncertainties and strongly affected by many variables as well as by future scenarios, so a proper approach in modeling and analyzing quantitatively these elements is fundamental for the final success. Understanding these issues is really fundamental and it is necessary to prepare engineers and scientists able to create models for supporting decision makers. The professional figure that will result as outcome of this Master Program (Laurea Magistrale dell'Universita' di Genova) will be able to operate in a variety of application domains (ranging from manufacturing to engineering, from military sector to business, from politics to personal and societal development), being able not only to apply strategies using the most appropriate models, but also to gain requirements for new methods and to design new methodologies, techniques and instruments for strategic planning and management. The subject is very innovative in terms of educational objectives and approach. The specific skills of strategy engineering are particularly useful for civil or military organizations operating in sectors with complex systems also close to the research world, and which include discrete and continuous modeling, statistical techniques, scenario simulations, enabling ICT technologies. Specific competences, that are expected to be useful particularly for advanced business dealing with complex systems and closer to the world of the research, include discrete and continuous modeling, statistical techniques, scenario simulations, enabling ICT technologies.

STRATEGOS: Join to become a Strategic Engineer to solve the Challenges of the Future

We know you're smart and you've already achieved goals by studying engineering along you Bachelor's degree.

The University of Genoa, together with the Companies supporting STRATEGOS, proposes you a new Challenge: the new International Master Science Degree (Laurea Magistrale dell'Universita' di Genova) in 'Engineering Technology for Strategy and Security'.

STRATEGOS is the first degree on Strategic Engineering in Italy and among the first ones in the world.

Multinational Companies of prestige like Accenture, Ansaldo, Axpo, Hitachi, Leonardo, Tenova, Thales etc. are among the promoters of STRATEGOS (120 Credits, all in English including Technical English Course) and offer to our students an Internship in their Organization which fully covers the last Semester (40 credits) and the Thesis (8 Credits): they like to train our students, but also to evaluate them and are searching for talents in Strategic Engineering. In addition there are also other experience opportunities in Laboratories and Centers of Excellence of International Agencies and Hi-Tech Companies, as well as Nationally and Internationally Institutions and Organizations.

The Master's Degree STRATEGOS (Laurea Magistrale, 2 years) is something new in the Engineering Field: Strategic Engineering is promoted by the industrial desire to combine Simulation, Data Analytics, AI/IA (Artificial Intelligence / Intelligent Agents) & Machine Learning to address Strategic Decision Making. STRATEGOS is strongly trans-disciplinary and provides to Engineers important elements of Economics and International Affairs to interact with Decision Makers, and extensively uses activities in Labs, Computer Simulations, as well as Experiences with Experts and in Companies, to concretely experiment the proposed concepts on the field.

The Semester during the STRATEGOS Internship and the related Project Work/Thesis are directly embedded within the program: this guarantees you to be able to complete the course in the two planned years: obviously it's not a breeze, but a challenge.

STRATEGOS offers you also many additional options, perfectly integrated into its Program: for example conducting a Summer Stage on the field along the first year, perhaps during a start-up of a new Innovative System or in a hospital system of an Emerging Country, or by collecting and processing data on board a Military Vessel or following a Manager within his Company; indeed we want our Strategic Engineers to know not only how to support high-level decisions using the most important modern technologies, but also to take the field, getting your hands dirty and facing real problems.

STRATEGOS offers you a lot of experimental activities to be conducted within Advanced Laboratories (e.g. Virtual & Augmented Reality, Serious Games, Cyber Security, Hybrid Warfare, Operational Planning, Project Management, etc.), as well as Seminars and Workshops open to Companies where you will interact with people who are already working and desire to be introduced into the Strategic Engineering topics.

By completing STRATEGOS Program you will learn how to interact with Decision Makers, both in the Large Industry, in Consultancy and/or in Hi-Tech Companies. This is a very stimulating job where you will have to know how to meet the needs of the Decision makers to design and develop innovative solutions based on the combination of Simulation, Big Data and Machine Learning and capable of giving a competitive advantage in making decisions. You will analyze problems, create new algorithms and architectures that combine these methodologies with enabling technologies (e.g. Social Media, New Sensor Networks, IoT*, IoE**) as well as structure the results within Immersive, Interactive and Intuitive Environments to validate and use them. Therefore it will be very important for you also to be able to propose directly alternatives to the Decision Makers and to guide them in the management and execution of their 'Strategies'. This job requires elements of Team Working, Time & People Management, Project Management, Leadership that you will learn throughout the entire course: from Courses to Laboratories and Workshops. In fact, STRATEGOS offers Computer Simulations & RPG with Business Experts and Academics to assess your skills, step by step, allowing you to experiment what you have learned to let you grow as an Engineer and to guide you to excel in this new Discipline.

The trans-disciplinary nature of STRATEGOS is another Challenge, requiring you, along with the Engineering exams, to study also some courses in Economics and International Affairs to be able to characterize the Region and/or Country risks and to know how to interact with Decision Makers, all aimed at becoming a transversal professionist as is required in today's industrial world.

STRATEGOS is obviously an International Master Science Degree (entirely in English, 2 years, Laurea Magistrale in Italy) with students from all over the world and to guarantee the excellence offers also an Technical English Course as well as other Language Courses for Emerging Markets (e.g. Spanish, Italian for foreign Students, Chinese).

At the end of the course you will be able to combine Modeling, Simulation, Data Analytics, AI/IA & Machine Learning to support the Strategic Decision Making; in facts, the 6 months of Internship will test you within a major Company, giving you the chance to demonstrate your potential and skills as well as what it means to become a Strategic Engineer.

STRATEGOS is organized by the University of Genoa, Polytechnic School.
The University has been founded in 1471 AD and Engineering School dates back to 1870 AD, but we do not talk about the past, STRATEGOS is the future: in Italy, last year and according to Censis Statistics, Engineering in Genoa resulted 1st in terms of Internationalization and Educational Path and 2nd in the overall ranking, confirming, as always, to be among very first Faculties of Italian Engineering Schools
Genoa is a wonderful city for History, Culture, Industry, Climate and Sea, but it is also much more: the collapse of the Ponte Morandi (2018), in its tragedy, gave us the opportunity to reiterate to the world that we are a City that courageously and effectively addresses the Strategic Challenges, day by day: we have been able to provide to all families new houses within few months. We are a City that works hard: from the Port to the Industry.
Last year it was registered (PWC report), a growth in Revenues of ~13% and +30% in Profits within first 800 Ligurian Companies. Some say that we are the 'Basilicon Valley' for Digitalization and indeed our Key Performance Indicators are certainly positive, however we are well aware of the critical points; and future challenges, but we are always ready and determined to deal with them.

STRATEGOS: diventa un Ingegnere Strategico per le sfide del Futuro

Sappiamo che sei in gamba ed hai già conseguito traguardi affrontando l'Ingegneria triennale.

Noi, Università di Genova, insieme con le Aziende che supportano STRATEGOS, ti proponiamo una nuova Sfida: la nuova Laurea Magistrale Internazionale in 'Engineering Technology for Strategy and Security'.

STRATEGOS è la prima Laurea sullo Strategic Engineering in Italia e tra le prime nel Mondo. Multinazionali di prestigio come Accenture, Ansaldo, Axpo, Hitachi, Leonardo, Tenova, Thales etc. sono tra i promotori di STRATEGOS (120 Crediti, all in English including Technical English Course) e offrono ai nostri studenti un Internship in Azienda che copre integralmente l'ultimo Semestre (40 crediti) e la Tesi (8 Crediti): lo fanno per far crescere i nostri ragazzi, ma anche per valutarli e potergli offrire opportunità di alto livello. La Laurea Magistrale STRATEGOS è nuova nel panorama di Ingegneria: Lo Strategic Engineering nasce da una esigenza Industriale legata al combinare Simulazione, Data Analytics, AI/IA (Artificial Intelligence / Intelligent Agents) & Machine Learning. STRATEGOS è fortemente transdisciplinare, fornendo agli Ingegneri anche elementi di Economia e International Affairs per interagire con i Decision Makers , ed usa estesamente attività di Laboratorio, Simulazioni al Computer, Esperienze con Esperti ed in Azienda, per sperimentare concretamente i concetti sul campo.

L'Internship semestrale STRATEGOS e il relativo Project Work/Tesi sono già strutturate nel programma: questo ti garantisce di poter completare il percorso nei due anni previsti: ovviamente non è una passeggiata, ma una sfida.

STRATEGOS, inoltre, ti propone anche molte opzioni aggiuntive già integrate perfettamente nel suo Programma: per esempio condurre uno Summer Stage sul campo nel primo anno, magari durante uno start up di un nuovo sistema innovativo o in un sistema ospedaliero di un paese emergente, oppure raccogliendo ed elaborando dati a bordo di un vascello militare o seguendo un Manager in Azienda; tutto questo perché desideriamo che i nostri Ingegneri Strategici sappiano non solo supportare decisioni ad alto livello usando le più moderne tecnologie, ma anche scendere in campo, sporcarsi le mani e affrontare problemi reali.

STRATEGOS ti propone molta attività sperimentale, da condursi in Laboratori Avanzati (e.g. Virtual & Augmented Reality, Serious Games, Cyber Security, Hybrid Warfare, Operational Planning, Project Management, etc.), oltre che Seminari e Workshops aperti alle Aziende dove potrai interagire con persone che sono già sul campo e che vogliono essere formate sui temi dello Strategic Engineering.

Chi completa il percorso STRATEGOS impara ad interagire con i Decision Maker, sia nella Grande Industria, nella Consulenza o in Aziende Hi-Tech. Si tratta di un lavoro stimolante dove devi saper raccoglierne le esigenze dai Decisori per progettare e sviluppare soluzioni innovative basate sulla combinazione di Simulazione, Big Data e Machine Learning capaci di dare un vantaggio competitivo nel prendere decisioni. Devi sapere analizzare i problemi, creare nuovi algoritmi e architetture che combinino queste metodologie con le enabling technologies (e.g. Social Media, New Sensor Networks, IoT, IoE) e anche saper strutturare i risultati in modo Immersivo, Interattivo e Inuitivo per poterli convalidare ed impiegare; ma è anche importante che impari a proporre ai Decisori le alternative e a guidarli nella gestione delle Strategie sul campo. Si tratta quindi una attività che richiede elementi di Team Working, Time & People Management, Project Management, Leadership che apprenderai durante tutto il percorso: dai Corsi, ai Laboratori e Workshop. Infatti, STRATEGOS propone Computer Simulation & RPG con Esperti Aziendali e Accademici per valutare il tuo livello di apprendimento, passo passo, facendoti applicare quanto hai appreso per farti crescere come Ingegnere e guidarti ad eccellere in questa nuova disciplina.

La trans-disciplinarietà di STRATEGOS sarà un'altra sfida, richiedendoti, a fianco degli esami di Ingegneria di seguire, anche alcuni corsi di Economia e di International Affairs per imparare a caratterizzare il rischio Regione o Paese e per saper interagire con i Decision Makers, il tutto mirato a diventare una figura professionale trasversale* , sempre più richiesta nel mondo industriale odierno.

L'Ateneo è stato fondato nel 1471 AD e Ingegneria nel 1870 AD, ma non parliamo del passato, STRATEGOS è il futuro: in Italia, nell'anno scorso e secondo il Censis, Ingegneria a Genova è risultata prima per Internazionalizzazione e Percorso e seconda nella classifica complessiva, confermando, come sempre, di essere tra le primissime Facoltà di Ingegneria Italiane.

Genova è una città meravigliosa per Storia, Cultura, Industria, Clima e Mare, ma è anche molto di più: il crollo del Ponte Morandi, nella sua tragicità, ci ha dato l'opportunità di ribadire al Mondo che siamo una Città che affronta coraggiosamente ed efficacemente le Sfide Strategiche, giorno per giorno, tanto che abbiamo ridato Casa a tutte le centinaia di Famiglie colpite nel giro di pochi mesi. Siamo una Città che lavora alacremente: dal Porto all'Industria.
L'anno scorso si è registrata (PWC report), una crescita del fatturato di circa il 13% a fronte di un +30% nei profitti nelle prime 800 aziende Liguri; alcuni dicono che siamo la 'Basilicon Valley' per la Digitalizzazone ed in effetti i nostri indicatori sono sicuramente positivi, tuttavia siamo ben consci delle criticità e delle sfide future, ma siamo pronti e decisi ad affrontarle come te che stai valutando la nostra Laurea Magistrale; ma ricordiamoci che STRATEGOS non è solo un'iniziativa Genovese, bensì Nazionale e ci vede tra i primissimi in Europa in questo settore 'Strategico'.

Infatti, i Patron Industriali di STRATEGOS sono aziende Leader, nella maggior parte Multinazionali, che vanno dalla grande Industria alla Consulenza, ma comprendono anche piccole realtà emergenti nel settore Hi-Tech.
